These pics are of the 2000g spool still in sealed packaging. It shows 1400g. The last one I ordered was like this too, but I was in production mode and had to use it right away before asking any questions.
Is this typical?

No worries. Each material has different density, therefore the volume will be different too.
An empty spool weighs about 400 g, so a brand new one with material should be around 2 kg 400 g.
