Threaded heat set inserts and infill settings

I use garden-variety hardware store taps, not sure what they're called technically... they're pointy.

Those would be hand taps and need to be backed out every couple turns or so to clear chips from the tap flutes.  Spiral point or gun taps push the chips ahead of the tap and are great for through holes because you can tap straight through unless tapping very deep.  Spiral flute taps push the chips out of the top of the hole and can be better for shallow, blind holes.  There are also form taps that deform the material to create the threaded hole (no chips) but they need very tight hole sizes and probably don't work well in plastic.

McMaster sells all forms and the small taps probably used in most 3D printed projects only run a few dollars each.  If you do much tapping, it can pay to try a few out.
