Airbrush

Just ordered my miniature airbrush set up.

Anyone airbrush their prints?

Curioud on if anyone found the best thinner for acrylic paints. I saw water or alcohol but wasn’t sure which is better.

Cheers.

I also have an airbrush but haven't used it yet. So I will eagerly await answers :)

I'm considering buying the Copic system which uses markers instead of liquid paint. I've seen it produce some awesome results, albeit not on printed parts.

I've been playing around with the idea of getting into airbrushing but not too sure where to start.. Too many choices!!!

I airbrush nearly all off my stuff, I use water based acrylic colors and have very good experiences with the vallejo airbrush colors. They have different kinds, I normally use the white primer:

dries quickly and is very long lasting...

you can thin them with water or a little more sophisticated use a isopropanol / distilled water solution ( I use a 50% / 50% ratio)

I bought this compressor:

http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B0036OOB5W?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00

it is sturdy, silent and has more than enough power.

I bought this airbrush:

http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B004INERK4?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00

pretty solid and works like it should...

if you have any further questions just ask...

best

Andreas

I also airbrush my figures (see my posts)

David

you are killing me... i always wanted to get involved but never got the chance to actually do it... providing more info and pics, will probably make me unable to resist...

Great. I got a cheap airbrush setup from http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001TO578Q/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I had a very large set up years ago and airbrushed my Roll off Truck for pennies on what it wouldve cost, but nothing this small and intricate. I'm sure it will be a learning process.

I am positive it will produce better results than my brushes.

Cool. I'm building my Paint booth tomorow I believe. It's a bit smaller than I expected but its probably the perfect size.

Looks way cooler than the brushes… lol

Do any of you have a process for the printed parts, as well as applying the paint? Something like a step by step would be great.

Some good step-by-step finishing techniques (and great models, too) here http://donfoley.com/ although you have to dig through the individual prints and his blog to see the tutorials.

Also this is a pretty great look: http://www.shapeways.com/forum/index.php?t=msg&th=14774&start=0 Not sure if the dyeing will work with ABS, maybe nylon only (and not really necessary if you print in black in the first place), but the technique could be adapted.

Waiting on my 2 gallon jar and metal plate to do an acetone bath for a rose I printed than I'm going to airbrush it and document the process. Should be posting it in the next two weeks.

Still havent built my Paint booth. Hopefully tomorrwo.

You got the same kit I bought. Let me know if you have problems getting consistent paint flow. Mine gives me trouble and I don’t have enough experience with airbrushing to identify the problem.

Have you tried different settings with the regulator?

Sometimes with cheap set ups, some need upgraded.

I would geuss that the regulator would be the first place to start. Can even get a small air tank in addition, that way there is back up pressure.

Thsi regulator seems the running pressure is around 30-40 psi

Made a quick paint box out of scrap wood.. Gotta install a little light and a fan. waiting on my bearing to put a flat turntable in it.

I'm thinking with turn table I dont need the top open but I might open it up with some hinges when I make the door for it and put handle on.

Stop posting pics of green grass!!! Mine is covered with snow right now!! ;) :D

Its not that green as it has a fungus of sorts or sod worms (working on that) but it was 81 degrees today. lol

Ta heck with snow.

For better results

sand

coat

automotive paint

And please apply some painter's tape for delimiting zones very fine thickness available.

Paint in layers. Bottom up.

Still hadn't finished my makeshift box but I used it just the same. Put a flat bearing inside with foam on top for a nice surface.

Great for attaching or embedding small objects to paint and it can rotate to ensure good coverage without moving.

I do have to practice more with airbrushing and use windex instead of water for a thinner but my Rose came out decent. I did have to get the brushes out since I think I thinned the paint too much but whatever works. lol

Plus I did an acetone bath on the Print so water thinned paint didn't adhere very good at first but I hear windex helps with that problem.
